January 24, 2016

Well, we know this is late.  It took a lot of energy to get back to Illinois and back into our daily routines.  All of our travel went smoothly and we had minimal jet lag; a feat only possible by His power.  We were up for over 30 hours on Sunday!

We were all packed on Saturday night, so we just had to wake up on time, pack our toothbrushes, eat breakfast and hit the road.  We got up at 5:30 on Sunday, ate, finished packing, and were ready when the Holt van driver arrived at 7:00.  I was sad to leave Fraser Suites, Insadong, Seoul, and SK, but it's pretty happy knowing we'll be back in a month.  The driver drove us an hour across Seoul in the early morning darkness to Incheon.  No one really talked.  He didn't speak any English, and Rachel was still half asleep.  So I just watched the city go by.  We did stop for fuel.  The funny nozzle and pump labeling revealed that we were in a LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) vehicle.  It was kept running while we fueled up which made me a tad nervous.

We crossed the Han River and then the bay onto Incheon (it's an island).  Soon we arrived at the airport.  It was busy!  Everything is efficient and perfectly sized in Korea.  So although the lines were intimidating they were always moving, and we had boarding passes and checked luggage within 30 minutes. While trying to find our line we actually saw Matt and Heather again!  That's something like 4 crazy encounters in huge crowds in a city of 26 million.

We got through security, another long line, and then found a more substantial brunch at another Paris Croissant.  We waited about an hour at the gate.  Honestly, the Americans were the most bizarre and interesting folks to people watch.  There was a tall extremely skinny backpacker dude with short shorts on. (Rachel said sounds like me.) ...but it was 1 degF in Seoul.

South Korea airports are much nicer than the United States'.

The plane was boarded efficiently and on time at 10:40 am on Sunday.  The gate to our KoreanAir 777 had all-glass boarding ramps and an escalator - fancy!  We watched the city below as we ascended to cruising altitude and settled in for 13 hours of flight time.  It was as beautiful from the sky as it was being there.  Both the countryside and city are beautiful!  We mostly watched movies (all 6 Star Wars are available for free on Korean Air).  My legs and feet swelled ridiculously from the low pressure and long sit.  I could barely get by boots on when they announced we were beginning our descent to O'Hare.  We landed in Chicago at 8:30 am on Sunday.  Our bags finally showed up at the baggage claim, and we made it to the car.  We were starving so we found an Original Pancake House (OPH) and had a big American breakfast.  FYI - for those that love OPH in Champaign, Illinois, all OPH are not equally great.  Somehow I managed to stay awake for the drive home.  My wife used her handy eye mask to get a small nap in.  We arrive home safe and sound at 1:30 pm.  Thank you to our friendly neighbor, Don, who gathered our mail and scooped the snow from our driveway.  We are so thankful for your servant heart.

Many of you have asked and I'm sure all of you are wondering how we're doing - waiting to hear from the court, being away from our son, waiting to return and get him.....
Well, for both of us it was the best trip we've taken.  Korea is awesome, our meetings with Ephraim couldn't have gone better, he is the cutest, and his foster mom is perfect.  We are mostly in awe - God is so good. We're in a awe that everything went perfectly, I'm amazed at the peace Rachel had flying and traveling around Korea via the subways, buses, and cabs, that his foster mom couldn't have been more amazing and that she loves Jesus, that court was so short and easy.  We got to play with and love Ephraim but knowing that he's with his Eomma in the meantime makes it okay being here.  We're anxious and scared like any other almost-first-time-parents.

We are waiting on the court to process all our paperwork and see if there will be a public notice.  We guess that we could travel as early as the week of 2/22 or it could be middle of March.  God has a plan and we're waiting on His timing.  We are, honestly, completely at peace knowing He's in control.

Thank you for all your prayers leading up to this trip and during this trip.  God answered powerfully.  Please continue to pray - for the next few weeks, for an ability to focus, prepare, and plan; for Ephraim's little heart to be ready for a big transition, for his foster mom to be ready to separate and heal, and for our hearts to be ready to pour out God's love as adoptive parents.

This verse has never been more true for us:

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6-7
